Perception is one of the main attributes in ADOM, the ninth value displayed to the right of your character's name. Its abbreviation is Pe.
Purposes[править | править исходный текст]
Perception has a few effects:
- How far you can see in dungeons. Characters with low perception will only see monsters when they are a few tiles away, though this can be alleviated by using a torch or the Farsight spell.
- Ability to find secret doors. This is also influenced by your character's race.
- Hearing noises. Listening skill is a bigger factor.
- Noticing traps. Alertness (passive) and Detect traps (active) are more likely to reveal traps.
Despite what the manual says, Perception is not one of the more important attributes, though Archers and other missile weapon users are likely to want a very high Perception. Thieves and other stealth-based classes will probably want a good Perception, as well.
There is also an unusual benefit to a very low Perception: 5 points or less lets you enter the Rift despite not meeting the Willpower requirement of 20 - you don't have to overcome your fear of heights if you are too short-sighted to see what you should be afraid of. It is, however, not at all trivial to even get such a low Perception value, since most characters start higher and in cases far higher, though the Mists of Chaos corruption combined with the relatively common Orcish Helmet can easily take a character with mediocre to good perception to that point.
All in all, perhaps the most important aspects of Perception are the required values for Master Packager (12) and Great Book Caster (15), rather popular talents.
How to train it[править | править исходный текст]
Garth[править | править исходный текст]
Pretty much one of two methods to reliably increase Perception is by spending money to train with Garth. Higher values require progressively higher amounts of gold, meaning there is a soft cap on this method. Low values are fixed with relatively low effort, but PCs should keep in mind that Perception is not usually worth big investments. Still, having a decent Perception is relatively important if the player plans on drinking a potion of exchange.
Stat potions[править | править исходный текст]
Potions of carrot juice and potions of gain attributes can be used to increase Perception. There is no soft or hard cap for using potions of gain attributes, but blessed potions of carrot juice will generally stop working after 20. Uncursed potions of carrot juice are rumored to increase very low values of Perception. Rooms that smell of carrots will give a one-time boost of 5 to Perception, if a potion of carrot juice is drunk inside them (in this case, any sort will do). This boost has no other limit; it is possible to go all the way to 99 Perception if one finds enough rooms (they can appear in the ID). Potions of gain attributes should be blessed before use and consumed once other methods of stat increase have stopped working.
Perception is the only attribute without a corresponding "potion of [attribute]" or "potion of [attribute] potential"; as such, there is no way to independently increase Perception potential.
Cannibalism[править | править исходный текст]
Starsign[править | править исходный текст]
Class powers[править | править исходный текст]
- Bards receive 6 Perception as part of their level 50 class power.
Corruption[править | править исходный текст]
Growing 12 eyes will grant 6 to Perception, and having black eyes grants a bonus of 3. Having one eye will grant 4 Perception only if the PC is not wearing a helmet.
How to Abuse It[править | править исходный текст]
The mist of chaos corruption reduces Perception by 10, and the babbling mouth corruption reduces it by 4.
Players will also lose one point of perception if they enter a room filled with shattering mirrors with an Appearance score of below 18 approximately.
Items[править | править исходный текст]
Several items in the game will grant a Perception bonus if worn (standard bonus in brackets). These include:
- the armor prefix "vigilant" ( 4) and the weapon suffix "of the eagle" ( 4)
- the artifacts amulet of raw steel ( 12) and Long Sting ( 6)
Additionally, equipping an orcish helmet reduces Perception -- usually by two points.
Requirements[править | править исходный текст]
|15||Great book caster|
Visible distance[править | править исходный текст]
|Perception level||Visible distance|
|in dungeons||outside, in daytime||outside, at dusk/dawn||outside, at night|
(See the Time article for details on when night/dawn/dusk/day is)
Wearing an uncursed necklace of the eye in dungeons will increase visibility range by 2, a blessed one by 3, and a cursed one will decrease visibility by 1.
Testing is required for the effect of torches and necklaces of the eye in the wilderness.
