Potions of exchange are Potions that, when drunk, rearrange the players stats. They can be thrown at monsters to exchange them for another monster, and items can be dipped in blessed potions to change the type of item. Number of rearranged stats depends on status of potion, while blessed one changes two stats, cursed swaps around six.

They are an essential part of what is commonly called the wish engine. In 1.2.0, the ability to use potions of exchange to create a wish engine was severely hampered by the fact that when a stack of items is dipped into the potion, each becomes different random item of that type, rather than the same item. It is still theoretically possible to generate a wish engine using this method, but the number of potions requires is prohibitively high. On the other hand, it is much more likely that, when dipping a stick of rings, at least one of the ones generated will be a Ring of djinni summoning. The item change effect can provide a decent enough shot at a needed item, such as a fireproof blanket. Note that items can only be generated at the danger level of the surrounding area.
Their stat rearrangement effect is occasionally used to improve the overall turnout of stat training techniques, exchanging the pumped stat for a lower one that can in turn be pumped while the pumped stat does its work someplace else. Even if no such techniques are employed, if the character has high Charisma or Appearance stats while other stats are low, drinking a potion of exchange is an attractive option.
Lastly, just having one in the pack to exchange a monster in a pinch can save a life.
